But using bamboo poles rather than wooden materials for your tiki hut is not only good for your tropical style; it is also very good for the environment. This is because, unlike hardwood, bamboo is one of the earth's most easily renewable resources. Harvesting bamboo as building material causes a lot less damage to local ecosystems than traditional hardwood logging. So next time you're thinking of building a new tiki bar or hut consider bamboo poles for a very beautiful finish. Please note that bamboo poles are not always straight and are guaranteed to crack in some cases because they come from a wet climate in China and is different than climate in the USA. Please not that bamboo pole sizes are approximate and will vary duty to it being a natural product. Bamboo Poles are not returnable.

HOW TO CUT BAMBOO POLES:

Step 1. Measure the piece of bamboo and make a pencil line where you want to cut it.

Step 2. If making a flat cut, score the bamboo along the pencil line with the sharp knife. Use light pressure so you don't splinter the bamboo, and make sure it is scored all the way around.

Step 3. Place the bamboo on a bench, table or other raised flat surface. If you can, clamp it to the bench or place it in a vise. Saw slowly with the hacksaw at the score mark. If the bamboo begins to splinter, stop and use the knife to make a deeper score. Then saw slowly again with the hacksaw. Hold the end that is not clamped down or have an assistant hold it so that it doesn't crack or splinter before you're finished sawing completely through the bamboo pole.

Step 4. Use a miter box for any angled cuts. Scoring is more difficult on an angle, but it must be done to prevent splintering. Use a fine-tooth miter saw if one is available.

Step 5. Use fine sandpaper to smooth any rough spots on the cut edge. Again, be gentle to avoid splintering.
